Thousands of hernia patients have suffered severe medical complications after receiving a hernia mesh patch. In recent years, major medical device manufacturers, including Johnson & Johnson and C.R. Bard, have come under fire over alleged product defects, as injured hernia mesh patients numbering in the hundreds take to court in pursuit of financial compensation.

Parietex Hernia Mesh Linked To Severe Complications

Now, plaintiffs have turned their eyes to another manufacturer, Covidien, a subsidiary of global giant Medtronic. Under the Covidien brand name (recently changed to Medtronic Minimally Invasive Therapies), Medtronic manufactures a wide range of hernia mesh products, all designed to reinforce weakened muscle walls after a hernia repair surgery.

Most popular are the company's Parietex and Versatex product lines, which can be used to patch abdominal defect walls through laparoscopic (or "minimally invasive") surgical procedures.

Neither Medtronic nor the US Food & Drug Administration have issued a recall for any Covidien mesh patches, but the products have been linked to severe complications.

In product complaints submitted to the FDA, a number of Parietex patients have described horrific adverse events, including chronic pain, life-threatening infections, internal organ adhesions and intestinal blockages.

Dozens of patients and medical providers blame mesh failures for invasive re-operation procedures, in which patients find themselves going under the knife again to fix problems caused by their first implant.

Parietex Lawsuits

In a growing number of product liability lawsuits, injured patients accuse Medtronic, through its Medtronic Minimally Invasive Therapies division, of manufacturing and marketing defective hernia mesh products.

Instead of providing adequate support for abdominal walls weakened by a hernia, plaintiffs claim that Covidien products, including the Parietex line of mesh patches, cause considerable harm and chronic pain. Some patients have been re-opened during subsequent surgical procedures only to find that a Covidien-branded mesh had broken apart or frayed inside the body, leading to debilitating organ perforations and severe infections.

Medtronic Hernia Mesh Products

Medtronic Minimally Invasive Therapies currently manufactures and sells a vast array of Parietex mesh products:

  • Parietex Composite Ventral Patch
  • Parietex Optimized Composite Mesh
  • Parietex ProGrip Self-Fixating Mesh
  • Parietex Folding Mesh
  • Parietex Flat Sheet Mesh
  • Parietex Plug and Patch System
  • Parietex Composite Open Skirt Mesh
  • Parietex Optimized Open Skirt Mesh
  • Parietex Composite Hiatal Mesh
  • Parietex Composite Parastomal Mesh
  • Parietex Hydrophilic Anatomical Mesh
  • Parietex Lightweight Monofilament Mesh

While these products vary in their design specifics, most of Medtronic's hernia mesh patches are manufactured from polyester, the synthetic polymer used widely in commercial manufacturing.

Are These Polyester Mesh Patches Dangerous?

Some critics have suggested that polyester is an inferior material, at least for the purposes of medical implants, than polypropylene, the industry standard for hernia mesh production. At the same time, thousands of patients who have filed suit against other hernia mesh companies, like C.R. Bard, claim to have suffered severe injuries due to polypropylene-based mesh products.

Where Covidien meshes are concerned, polyester patches have been linked to a higher risk for severe infections and device failure, as the material's edges begin to fray or decompose inside the body.

Lawsuits Say Parietex Products Are Defective, Dangerous

In a series of new product liability lawsuits, injuried mesh patients accuse Medtronic of failing to warn medical care professionals of these alleged risks. The majority of these patients have been forced to undergo at least one revision procedure due to mesh complications, though some patients have found themselves back inside an operating room on multiple occasions.

Now, the patients have decided to fight back. By filing suit against Medtronic, the injured plaintiffs are demanding financial compensation from the company, arguing that, due to the alleged defects inherent in Parietex hernia mesh products, Medtronic should be held accountable for their injuries. Alongside past and future medical expenses, many of the patients have demanded compensation for their lost wages, emotional trauma and physical pain.
