Prevacid has been one of the most widely-prescribed proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in the United States for more than a decade. Research now suggests that long-term use increases the risk of serious health issues, including kidney disease and life-threatening infections. Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the company behind the popular heartburn drug, is being sued for failing to warn consumers about these risks.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Sued for Prevacid Injuries

Prevacid, Prevacid 24 HR, and Prevacid IV are associated with several adverse health events. Research now suggests that Takeda Pharmaceutical knew, or should have known, about the potential risks associated with its popular PPIs. The drug company is facing an increasing number of product liability lawsuits in state and federal courts across the country.

Prevacid injury lawsuits claim, among other things, that:

Pharmaceutical companies have to make sure that the products they create and market are safe for patients to use. Any known risks or hazards must be fully disclosed. Takeda and other PPI manufacturers can be financially liable if patients are harmed because of these undisclosed and unreasonably dangerous risks.

Prevacid Lawsuits Among Those Consolidated in New Jersey MDL

As of April 2020, hundreds of Proton Pump Inhibitor lawsuits have been merged and consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) before a New Jersey federal court. Many of those lawsuits involve Prevacid claims. According to the most recent case management order, bellwether trials for MDL 2789 are scheduled to begin on November 15, 2021.

Can I File a Prevacid Injury Lawsuit?

Prevacid is aggressively advertised on TV, in magazines, and on billboards across the country. Those advertisements pay off. It’s estimated that Prevacid is prescribed to more than 4.8 million Americans every year. Prevacid is now available over-the-counter (OTC), making it one of the most regularly consumed heartburn medications in the United States.

You trusted these advertisements. Maybe you even asked your doctor to prescribe Prevacid instead of Prilosec, Nexium, or other PPIs. You didn’t know that taking a simple heartburn medication could have disastrous consequences. Why? Because you weren’t warned about the risks. Now you’re dealing with health issues that might affect you for the rest of your life.

What is Prevacid?

Prevacid, also known by the generic name lansoprazole, is one of the country’s most popular proton pump inhibitor medications. Like other PPIs, Prevacid can be used to treat:

Prevacid is primarily prescribed for the short-term treatment of active duodenal ulcers. The PPI can also be used in conjunction with amoxicillin and clarithromycin to treat adults with H. pylori infections and chronic duodenal ulcer disease.

How Does Prevacid Work?

Prevacid is used to treat health conditions related to the production or release of excessive stomach acid. The drug works by blocking the release of gastric acid in the stomach. Limiting the amount of acid that’s produced by the stomach can give the body time to heal.

Unfortunately, studies now suggest that stomach acid plays an incredibly important role in our health and well being. Suppressing gastric acid with PPIs, including Prevacid, has been linked to a host of adverse health issues.

Prevacid Risks and Complications

Studies have linked Prevacid, Prevacid 24 HR, and Prevacid IV with several adverse health issues. Complications and risks associated with the use of Prevacid include:

Research Reveals Link Between Prevacid Use and Kidney Failure

Prevacid was one of the first proton pump inhibitors to be approved by the FDA. Decades ago, pharmaceutical companies and medical experts believed that there were no huge risks associated with taking Prevacid or other PPIs. However, new research reveals that Prevacid may increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

Acute Kidney Injury: A 2015 study found that Prevacid users may be 2.5 times more likely to develop acute kidney injury. The same study revealed that Prevacid users were 3 times more likely than non-PPI users to develop acute interstitial nephritis.

Chronic Kidney Disease: One study found that taking Prevacid “more than once a day or for extended periods of time” increased the risk of CKD by 20 to 50 percent. Prevacid is only intended to be used for short-term treatment – approximately two weeks – of certain ulcer-related health issues.

Unfortunately, many Prevacid users aren’t aware that long-term use of the drug could seriously jeopardize their health. Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the company behind Prevacid, has failed to warn patients about these risks.

Prevacid May Increase Your Risk of a Heart Attack

Prevacid may increase the risk of a heart attack, even if you have no history of heart disease or failure. In fact, one study found that taking Prevacid increased the likelihood of a heart attack by 21 percent.

Risk of Stomach Cancer May Increase While Taking Prevacid

Gastric acid plays a vital role in the body. Preventing the stomach from producing acid can result in systemic health issues. New studies reveal that long-term suppression of stomach acid may also contribute to certain types of cancer. Research suggests that Prevacid users may be three times more likely to suffer from stomach cancer.
